When we envisioned the new iPhone, we landed on a remarkably thin and light design. But it’s nearly impossible to make a device so thin and so light without sacrificing features or performance.


 We could have taken the easy way out and designed something more reasonable and less remarkable. But we didn’t. If the technology didn’t exist, we invented it. If a component wasn’t small enough, we re-imagined it. If convention was standing in the way, we left it behind. The result is iPhone 5: the thinnest, lightest, fastest iPhone ever.

iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimetres thin. To make that happen, Apple engineers had to think small, component by component. They created a nano-SIM card, which is 44 per cent smaller than a micro-SIM. The intelligent, reversible Lightning connector is 80 per cent smaller than the 30-pin connector. The 8MP iSight camera has even more features — like panorama and dynamic low-light mode — yet it’s 20 per cent smaller. And the new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip but 22 per cent smaller. Even with so much inside, iPhone 5 is 20 per cent lighter and 18 per cent thinner than iPhone 4S.

Making a thinner, lighter iPhone meant even the display had to be thinner. Apple engineers accomplished that by creating the first Retina display with integrated touch technology. Which means instead of a separate layer of touch electrodes between display pixels, the pixels do double duty — acting as touch-sensing electrodes while displaying the image at the same time. With one less layer between you and what you see on iPhone 5, you experience more clarity than ever before. All on a display that’s 30 per cent thinner than before. And here is the rest of it.

This next big thing of this year – iPhone 5 – from Apple is in making. Even though it is clear by now that Apple won’t be introducing their 6th generation of iPhone in June this year we’re getting some reports that the fruit may finally introduce it in June this year. In a recent interview on Japanese TV channel a Foxconn recruiter said that the company is looking for 18,000 employees in order meet “some deadline”. Upon asking why Foxconn is recruiting so many people at once, the recruiter mentioned that the company is definitely recruiting them for next gen iPhone manufacturing which “will” come out in June later this year.

Many Apple pundits believe that the company would continue to follow their last year’s launch plan which makes sense in a lot of ways. Apple changed their iPhone launch plan and launched their 5th generation of iPhone–iPhone 4S– in October last year. The plan worked pretty well for Apple which also gave them a lot of sales. More than 37 million iPhone units were sold in one quarter, now that’s a huge number.
Apple is very secretive company and even people who work on a specific product don’t know how it looks like or when is it coming out in the market. How can a recruiter be aware of such sensitive information? Even carrier partners like Sprint and Verizon don’t know when Apple plans to launch their next iteration of iPhone. AT&T,however, always gets a hat tip before the launch of any product but this report is not coming from partner carriers. Foxconn is Apple’s principal supplier of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and MacBooks it is possible that top tier management of Foxconn “may be” aware of their deadline but they leak it THAT easy.

iPhone 4S is doing well in the market and the phone is leading US’ smartphone industry, the sales are good, customers are satisfied and interestingly the product is growing. Why would Apple release a next gen iPhone when their previous iPhone is still doing good in the market. These are some of the question which conflict with this recent report. We’re way more than skeptical about this report and an iPhone 5 launch in June is highly unlikely.

In a recent report from the New York Times, the newspaper gives us great detail about why Apple outsources iPhone manufacturing to China, and how Steve Jobs changed the iPhone 2G weeks before the release.

The report features many short stories from Apple employees who give first-hand accounts of why Apple decided to move their manufacturing overseas. The article also gives a very interesting look of President Obama’s Silicon Valley Dinner back in February of last year . At the dinner, many Silicon Valley executives attended, including Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

Many executives were able to ask President Obama questions. While Steve Jobs was talking, President Obama interrupted him and asked him “what would it take to make iPhones in the United States?” Steve Jobs simply replied with “Those jobs aren’t coming back”.

The article also goes in depth about how weeks before the iPhone 2G was supposed to release, Steve Jobs had the screen changed from plastic to glass:

In 2007, a little over a month before the iPhone was scheduled to appear in stores, Mr. Jobs beckoned a handful of lieutenants into an office. For weeks, he had been carrying a prototype of the device in his pocket.

Mr. Jobs angrily held up his iPhone, angling it so everyone could see the dozens of tiny scratches marring its plastic screen, according to someone who attended the meeting. He then pulled his keys from his jeans.

People will carry this phone in their pocket, he said. People also carry their keys in their pocket. “I won’t sell a product that gets scratched,” he said tensely. The only solution was using unscratchable glass instead. “I want a glass screen, and I want it perfect in six weeks.”
Most of us probably already know why Apple outsources their manufacturing. Money. Not only is it cheaper to outsource to China, you can also hire workers much more faster than in the US. Jennifer Rigoni, Apple’s former Worlwide Supply Demand Manager said “They could hire 3,000 people overnight. What U.S. plant can find 3,000 people overnight and convince them to live in dorms?”.

“The entire supply chain is in China now,” said another former high-ranking Apple executive. “You need a thousand rubber gaskets? That’s the factory next door. You need a million screws? That factory is a block away. You need that screw made a little bit different? It will take three hours.”

Since the iPhone 4S debuted last month at Apple’s “Let’s Talk” iPhone event, everyone has been talking about one feature — Siri. The Cupertino company’s digital assistant has become extremely popular, even outside the tech world.

Unlike most inventions that make their way into Apple’s iOS products, Siri wasn’t made in Cupertino. It was actually acquired in a deal rumored to be worth close to $200 million dollars, making a handful of men instant millionaires. Meet Dag Kittlaus…

9to5Mac points to an e24 article that spotlights Kittlaus, one of Siri’s four co-founders. The 44 year old Norwegian had his life turned upside down last year when he received a phone call from Apple regarding his company’s personal assistant software.

But the call wasn’t from just any executive, Steve Jobs himself was on the line to talk about a possible acquisition of Kittlaus’ team and their Siri technology. Kittlaus recalls his reaction to the call from the ex CEO (Norwegian translation):

“Of course it was a great moment when Steve Jobs called and wanted to buy my company. It was surreal. When I heard that it was him, I knew we had made it big. In advance, we were pretty confident that the technology we had developed was so startling that we would get some kind of breakthrough.

Steve was the first caller.”

Once the deal with Apple was complete, Kittlaus and team moved to Cupertino to continue their work on Siri at Apple’s headquarters. He spent 18 months working on the project before leaving the company in October — shortly after the iPhone 4S launched.

Perhaps the most interesting part of e24′s article is Kittlaus’ thoughts on working at Apple. He says that in his tenure with the company, he learned that the iPhone-makers weren’t motivated at all by money or profit. “They just desire to create fantastic products.”
